Lyons Decaf Blend lives up to its slogan of "The Tasty Decaf". If you can find a box, pick it up.
From Lyons
Enjoy a delicious moment of relaxation without the caffeine.
In the mug
Lyons is confident in the steep strength of this tea and recommends a 1-2 minute steep. I realized when writing this review that I had been steeping the tea for too long at 4 minutes, and ...
How is Lyons Decaf Blend decaffeinated?
It was difficult to determine which decaffeination method Lyons uses for its decaf tea, so I reached out to Lipton, Lyons parent company directly. Once Lipton put me in touch with Lyons, Cedric from the Lyons Consumer Engagement Centre replied shortly after:
Good day John,
Thank you for contacting Lyons Consumer Engagement Centre.
The popular methods of decaffeination are CO2 and ethyl acetate. We use the latter one—both processes effectively remove caffeine from the black tea base.
Thank you for your continued support and loyalty to our Lyons brand. We hope you keep in touch with us, and should you need any further assistance do feel free to contact us.
So, there you have it: Lyons Decaf Blend is decaffeinated with Ethyl Acetate, making it one of my favourite teas decaffeinated this way.
On the shelf
Lyons uses biodegradable plant-based tea bags that are not individually wrapped, which helps reduce packaging. Some boxes use plastic-free packaging, too.
In North America it can be hard to find Lyons outside of a specialty store, but keep an eye out. And if you're in Ireland, definitely pick up a box.
