Typhoo Decaf
Our review
★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
With a very strong steep and solid flavour, Typhoo Decaf is a decaf tea to try.
In the mug
It has a nice strong steep and can take milk as well as a non-decaf tea. The taste is softer and less tannic than a non-decaf tea, but it still packs a punch.
The brew is so dark that when I gaze into a freshly-steeped mug of Typhoo Decaf I wonder whether I'm staring into a void of darkness or whether the void is staring back at me.
How is Typhoo Decaf decaffeinated?
Typhoo is somewhat cryptic on which decaffeination method they use:
Typhoo uses a technique to wash the tea which is highly selective for caffeine. This is thought to give a better flavour than some other methods.
According to this Amazon answer, Typhoo uses Methylene Chloride to decaffeinate their tea. Based on the flavour of the tea and how well it steeps, I believe it.
On the shelf
Typhoo Decaf generally comes in a box that contains foil-wrapped packs, each holding 40 teabags. The box itself isn't wrapped in plastic.
From Typhoo
Typhoo uses a decaffeination process which gently removes most of the caffeine and is believed to give a better flavour of decaffeinated tea than other methods. Recent research has shown that the healthy antioxidants in tea are not removed during this process. So, it’s a great alternative to regular tea when you want to reduce your daily caffeine intake.
